Rule 23: If it were easy, it would have been done already

Our clients rely on Boardroom Events to be a conduit for valuable personal connections and insight into what’s shaping information technology in the midmarket space, so a portion of my time is dedicated to understanding how transformational leaders are pioneering processes around the globe and beyond.

Peter Diamandis of the XPRIZE Foundation is not only a whiz, wildly successful businessman and an inspiration, he’s a fellow Greek with a wicked sense of humor. I recently shared with my colleagues Peter’s Laws, The Creed of a Passionate and Persistent Mind, and Rule 23, among others, resonated particularly loudly this week.

Earlier this year, we spoke with CIOs in the midmarket who were building the case for blockchain technology applications across their organizations. Serial entrepreneur and Talla founder Rob May shared that even at the enterprise level, businesses are missing opportunities to apply distributed ledger technology by applying it in “places where it doesn’t belong” because of an inability to separate it as a transactional system for digital currency.

Once the dust of the blockchain hype cycle settles a bit, it will be interesting to follow in the coming months how any forthcoming legislation will potentially regulate the governance of blockchain technology versus the technology itself.

Speaking of regulations, there have been some fascinating discussions this month during our Regional Roundtable events around how compliance requirements, particularly in the construction industry with regard to cybersecurity, are adding additional hurdles for CIOs and IT departments already commonly perceived as inhibitors to progress. We opened a great dialogue with a leading design strategist around how algorithm models, built on generalized representations of data, can inadvertently perpetuate gender stereotypes.

Lastly, I couldn’t be more proud of my strong team of primarily female staff for taking a brief respite from their workloads to lend a hand earlier this month to a community in Puerto Rico still working to rebuild after a devastating 2017 hurricane season. I hope that given the opportunity, more companies might seek to do creative corporate team building that benefits both participants and those underserved areas.
